1. Can you go on assignment on a moments notice? You need to be ready and flexible to get the job done. Freelance jobs will often need to be filled within hours of the position opening. It pays to be ready and willing to take a job when it becomes available. Becoming a reliable photographer who does great work will help you get called back first the next time the company needs to hire someone.
2. How do you break into freelancing? Many newspapers, publications, sporting groups, and school districts need photographers frequently. These jobs are can often be found posted on sites like Craigslist, oDesk, Elance, or other outsourcing website. However, the majority of these jobs are found by word of mouth. So make sure you are networking and getting yourself known to people who might be able to hire you.
- You need a cell phone to be available when the calls come in to take photography jobs. No one wants to be tied to their phone, but you’ll need to think hard about your phopne boundaries and whether you want to accept calls after business hours if it means getting a job.
- You need to get a photography portfolio together. This way potential employers can check out your best photo work and be reassured you knwo what you’re doing. It could be an online blog that shows what type of style of photography you can perform. It helps to develop a niche to set you apart. It could be sports, weddings, politics, or conventions.
